Kindle’s dictionaries, where do they come from?

If you have a Kindle, you must have used the dictionaries at one point. It’s when you select a word (by either moving the cursor to it or simple holding your finger on it for a second) and the device shows you the meaning from a dictionary in the book’s language. Where do these definitions come from and why do they work for all languages?

Kindle automatically downloads required dictionaries when you download an eBook from¬†Amazon. This is pretty cool. The dictionary is then put in a “Collection” simply called Dictionaries and ready to be used in your new book.

It’s not a fully functional dictionary all the time, though, as for instance my Dutch dictionary is a translation book and when I want a definition of a Dutch word, I get English feedback. I’m not sure why. At any rate, thank you Amazon! :-)
