Kindle’s dictionaries, where do they come from?

If you have a Kindle, you must have used the dictionaries at one point. It’s when you select a word (by either moving the cursor to it or simple holding your finger on it for a second) and the device shows you the meaning from a dictionary in the book’s language. Where do these definitions come from and why do they work for all languages?

Kindle automatically downloads required dictionaries when you download an eBook from Amazon. This is pretty cool. The dictionary is then put in a “Collection” simply called Dictionaries and ready to be used in your new book.

It’s not a fully functional dictionary all the time, though, as for instance my Dutch dictionary is a translation book and when I want a definition of a Dutch word, I get English feedback. I’m not sure why. At any rate, thank you Amazon! 🙂
